When it comes to anxiety and depression, each of these titles has had a profound impact on or significantly affected the course of my life. So here they are…

Change Your Thinking

The first book I read about anxiety was recommended to me by a dear friend who was quite different to me on the outside (he was extroverted, I am introverted), yet turned out very similar on the inside.

Some of the CBT (cognitive behaviour therapy) strategies taught in this book I still use years later and even teach as part of my anxiety course Take Back Control. And I use them, mostly on auto-pilot, every. single. day.

If you’re anxious, this book is highly recommended.

A New Earth

A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle was an immersive read that exposed the concepts and problems with how the ego dictates thoughts and actions in an unconscious mind, and illuminated the ideas of mindfulness, uncovering conditioned thinking and developing a more spiritual existence.

In short this book will help you pull yourself out of your own mind. A very good thing when you’re battling anxiety!

Again the concepts and mindset shifts this book gave me were unforgettable and set me on a new path. Get it.

First, We Make the Beast Beautiful

A book I read when I was already in the process of making huge improvements to my anxiety, First, We Make the Beast Beautiful really offers a lot of insight into what it’s like living with anxiety and makes you feel very… well, not alone!

Rather than delivering a strategy to “fix” anxiety, this book gives plenty of real life accounts that make you feel much more normal, as well as a new hopeful way of looking at things for those of us who deal with it every day.

She interviews experts and even recounts her chat with The Dalai Lama. Most importantly though, this book affirmed some of my deeper beliefs about anxiety as a human condition instead of a black and white medical diagnosis, and encouraged me to reframe anxiety as a different state of being that drives a deeper more passionate experience of life.

Read this one to feel more like a normal human being and start to shift yourself from the negative into the positive.

Reasons to Stay Alive

Reasons to Stay Alive was one of the resources that got me through until I could start to climb my way out of the dark hole that is depression.

Depression is incredibly lonely, and in a time when it feels like literally no one could ever understand what you’re going through – this book will be your best friend… it really helped me.

If you’re depressed – read it.

If you’re trying to understand someone who is depressed – read it.

I hope this helps!
